Part 5: Using English Numbers in Real Life!
Numbers are everywhere! Here’s how we use them:
1. Your Age:
- Question: “How old are you?”
- Answer: “I am twenty-five years old.” (Or “I am 25.”)
2. Phone Numbers: We say phone numbers digit by digit.
- My phone number is five-five-five, one-two-three-four. (555-1234)
- Zero can be said as “oh” in phone numbers. Example: “My number is eight-oh-three-two.” (8032)
3. Prices (Shopping!):
- “How much is this?”
- “It’s ten dollars.” ($10)
- “That shirt is twenty-five pounds.” (£25)
- “The coffee is two euros and fifty cents.” (€2.50)
4. Simple Quantities (How many?):
- “How many apples do you have?”
- “I have three apples.”
- “There are four people in my family.”
- “I need one hundred grams of sugar.”
5. Dates:
- “Today is January first.” (We often use ordinal numbers for dates, but for now, knowing the basic numbers is a great start!)
Example Dialogue:
- Friend 1: “Hello! How many pens do you have?”
- Friend 2: “Hi! I have seven pens. How old are you?”
- Friend 1: “I am thirty-three years old. What’s your phone number?”
- Friend 2: “It’s nine-eight-seven, six-five-four-three.”
